Port Alfred SPCA, as we are generally known, covers a vast area of Ndlambe and parts of Peddie. We look after all animals needing protection and help from Nanaga in the West to Hamburg in the East, and for about 20 kms inland towards the Blaaukrantz. The animals we most frequently deal with are pets such as dogs and cats as well as cattle, goats, horses and wildlife including marine life.
Our SPCA relies upon public funding from fundraising activities organised by the Fundraising Committee. We also have a Thrift Shop situated at the SPCA in Station Hill where we sell second hand goods and clothing donated by the public. Recently, we have had shelves constructed in our garage where we have a great selection of second-hand books. These books are sold for R20 and the public is invited to visit the SPCA and browse to their hearts content. Jigsaw puzzles are also for sale. Books and Puzzles are sold outside Pick ‘n Pay in Heritage Mall on Monday and Wednesday mornings. The Home Industries shop has a mezzanine where some of the goods from the Thrift Shop are available together with some books and jigsaw puzzles.
We receive no funding at all from the Municipality and therefore we are met with huge expenses with the work we do on their behalf. This means that the Small Pound is financed by our fundraising. With the large areas we cover, not only the towns such as Alexandria, Cannon Rocks, Boknes, Bushman’s, Kenton, Port Alfred and Kleinemonde, but also the rural villages and townships along away, we are under financial strain at all times.
Boarding of dogs and cats is used to bring in much needed income but, with the advent of Covid, our local supporters have done very little travelling and our income from Boarding has decreased significantly.
We board all breeds of dogs and we are able to house two dogs or cats from one household together, if required.
Do pop along to the SPCA in Station Hill to have a look at the facilities. Please also consider adopting a pet from the SPCA. Our SPCA is open from 9 am – 4 pm from Mondays to Fridays and from 9 am to 12 noon on Saturdays.
Please also remember the detrimental effects that fireworks have on animals, especially over this New Years time!
